Children belong in safe, healthy and loving families—not orphanages.
Let’s work together to make positive change.
I'm open to collaboration through speaking engagements, partnerships, media interviews and consulting.
MY PASSION & PURPOSE
Child Rights & Sustainable Family Care
Thank you for stopping by! My name is Morgan Wienberg. I am dedicated to protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse while empowering families to thrive and build better futures. I believe that international aid should prioritize the best interests of children, reinforce local child protection systems and sustainably empower those in need to pursue locally-driven solutions.
With over a decade of experience in international nonprofit leadership and cross-cultural child protection interventions, I am eager to share the lessons that have shaped my personal and professional growth so that others can have a positive impact for children and families worldwide.
My journey began when I volunteered at an orphanage in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Like most people who volunteer internationally, I had good intentions – but after living in the orphanage, I realized my actions had unintended consequences.
I discovered that the majority of children in orphanages (over 80%) have families who love them but can’t afford to care for them, and that foreign-funded orphanages with foreign volunteers create an economy that drives families apart. This inspired me to establish a nonprofit organization that works with Haitians and local authorities to develop and deliver a range of programs that support children and their families so they can stay together.
My personal experience has been one of self-reflection, questioning the role I play as a foreigner in another country. Having lived in Haiti for the past 12 years, I’ve learned that respectful partnerships can create positive change as long as we're well informed and focussed on helping in the most effective way.
In Haiti I've witnessed a shift towards family-based care, but there is still a lot of progress to be made. By acknowledging and addressing the role that countries in North America and across the globe play in facilitating social change internationally, we can take action to ensure we have a real, lasting impact.
With an open mind and a dose of humility, I believe all of us can rise up and create a positive impact for ourselves and others in this world. Will you join me?
MY STORY
Not About Me Documentary
Over the past decade, several different filmmakers have followed my journey in Haiti. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that I understood that the story I wanted to tell really wasn’t about me, but about what the Haitians I came to help have taught me. I’d love to share the documentary with you. You can find out more at www.notaboutmefilm.com .
OFFICIAL TRAILER | Not About Me is an independent feature-length documentary that follows my 10-year journey from a somewhat naïve orphanage volunteer to becoming a more meaningful partner working with Haitians to build a better future. This is my story, but it is also about the rest of us rethinking how we help and give.
MORGAN’S BACKSTORY | Growing up in Whitehorse, I had ambitious expectations of myself, normal teenage insecurities and struggles with my own mental health. Over the next decade in Haiti, I overcame physical, mental and emotional obstacles to find renewed strength and a more healthy balance in life.
THE ISSUES
Critical Issues for Awareness & Advocacy
These are some key ideas I believe are important to building understanding and changing actions. But they are not just my ideas. There is now a growing global movement – backed by decades of research – that is shaping government policies to uphold our collective commitments to child rights and push for legislation that reforms the institutional systems that contravene them.
Children belong in families, not institutions
Growing up in orphanages has negative effects on a child’s social, emotional and mental wellbeing. Being part of a family with broader community connections is much healthier.
Orphanages are fueled by poverty
and profit.
Foreign donations and paid volunteer programs create demand for children in “orphanages”, which drives family separation and child trafficking.
To make a difference, we need to flip the system
Those we intend to help are the experts of their reality. We need to listen and take direction from them instead of acting on our own desires, perceptions and worldviews.
We are the key to positive change
The greatest change can occur when we as donors, volunteers and organizations shift our mentality and redirect our support to programs that help families and communities take care of each other.
It's really important to be able to question things, like international aid. We need to have a level of humility where we can admit we’ve made a mistake and learn how to do better.
